Hurricanes DE Chad Thomas earns late Senior Bowl invite, WR Braxton Berrios talks Senior Bowl QBs

Another one of the Hurricanes’ veteran playmakers has earned a spot in the Senior Bowl.

Former Miami defensive end Chad Thomas, who this weekend is playing in the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, will head to Mobile, Ala., early next week for the Senior Bowl, earning a late invite to the prestigious showcase game Friday.

Thomas, who started all 13 games for the Hurricanes last season, finished with 41 tackles, a team-high 12.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

In Mobile, he’ll join former UM teammates Braxton Berrios and Michael Badgley on the North roster. He will wear No. 90 in the game, according to the Senior Bowl’s updated roster.

Former Hurricanes tight end Chris Herndon had earned a spot in the game as well, but is continuing to rehab a knee injury suffered in Miami’s regular-season finale at Pittsburgh. He said in December he intended to head to Mobile to take part in interviews with on-site NFL personnel, but his status for the game itself was in question. As of late Friday afternoon, his name did not appear on either the North or South roster.

Berrios impressed with Senior Bowl QBs

Like Thomas, Berrios is hoping to use next week’s Senior Bowl to impress countless NFL scouts and executives expected to be in Mobile.

And he knows there will be plenty of eyes on him, considering the group of quarterbacks he’ll be working with at the Senior Bowl.

Berrios — who was Miami’s leading receiver this year with a team-high 55 catches for 679 yards and nine touchdowns — shares a roster with quarterbacks Luke Falk of Washington State, Tanner Lee of Nebraska, Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma and Josh Allen of Wyoming, who was projected Thursday as the No. 1 pick in the draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper.

“I couldn’t have gotten luckier. All those guys are obviously, big-name guys. But Josh Allen? Everybody has him pegged as No. 1 or No. 2. And Baker, by saying his name, he’s a consensus first-round pick. Those are two first-day guys that are going to be throwing me the ball. That’s huge, for many reasons. Everybody’s going to be paying attention, obviously,” Berrios told the Sun Sentinel this week. “It’s fun working with guys that are really that prestigious in the QB room. In the QB world, they’re the guys. I’m excited.

“It’s tough because the first time we throw, it’s [going to be] a practice. You go right out there so there’s zero chemistry. There’s zero timing. You have to feel your way out. Obviously, by Saturday, you’ve had enough reps to at least get through a game with it. But I’m ecstatic just to be around those guys, not to mention, a Heisman Trophy winner. He’s the Heisman Trophy winner. It’s a very unique opportunity and I’m humbled to be part of that group.”
