Jerry Seinfeld, one of the most successful comedians of all time, comes to the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek on Friday for two shows.

Best known for the television sitcom named after him, Seinfeld impacted pop culture, proving a show “about nothing” could run for 10 years straight and garner a huge following.

“Few comedians have had such significant impact on American culture. Jerry Seinfeld created an entire style of comedy that didn’t exist previously and is still considered a gold standard of comedic writing and storytelling,” said Vilar Artistic Director Owen Hutchinson.

Born in Brooklyn in 1954, standups like George Carlin, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor inspired Seinfeld to some extent. But unlike Pryor, he was a clean comic with an observational style of humor that revolved around the absurdities of everyday life.

His debut appearance on “The Tonight Show” in 1981 — back when Johnny Carson hosted it — launched his career, and by 1989 he had teamed up with comedian Larry David to create the witty-dialogue, eccentric-character “Seinfeld,” which won Emmy, Golden Globe and People’s Choice awards and was named “the greatest television show of all time” in 2009 by TV Guide, as well as the best sitcom ever in a “60 Minutes/Vanity Fair” poll. Its finale was one of the most-watched television shows in history, with more than 76 million viewers.

In 2002, Seinfeld starred in “Comedian,” a documentary chronicling the process of building an act from scratch. He co-wrote and starred in the animated film “Bee Movie” and launched “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” in 2012, a web series where he drives around with famous comedians and discusses life.

“Beyond his stand-up work, Seinfeld is a cherished icon in the entertainment industry, spanning television, movies and contributions in pop culture. His recent appearances on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ or as a notable guest at the ‘Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Episode’ elevate the production with an element of prestige, serving as Seinfeld’s nod of approval to the next generation of comedic greats,” Hutchinson said.

Friday night, Seinfeld will, once again, be in good company. “The Vilar has cultivated an extraordinary legacy of comedy over the decades, welcoming legendary comedians including Robin Williams, Lewis Black, Jim Gaffigan, Jay Leno and David Spade,” said Cameron Morgan, Vilar’s executive director. “This winter season proudly continues that tradition, featuring the iconic Jerry Seinfeld, soon followed by returning favorite and acclaimed SNL alum Kevin Nealon.”
