Homicide squad detectives are investigating the death after the man died in hospital.

A 24-year-old-man has died after being stabbed during a fight in Lyndhurst in Melbourne's south-east on Friday night, Victoria Police says.

Police said officers were called to reports of a group of males seen fighting in the vicinity of Society Avenue about 8:30pm.

Emergency services arrived to find a male with serious injuries consistent with a stabbing.

Police said the man was believed to have lived in the local area.

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the incident.

"All other parties had fled the scene," police said.

"The injured male, who is yet to be identified, was taken to hospital where he later died.

"A crime scene has been established and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains ongoing."

Police said about 10 people were involved in the assault.

Police believe attack was targeted

Adam Tilly, a detective inspector with Victoria Police, said witnesses saw a large group of males involved in the assault, with some of them armed with machetes.

He said police understood a group of males approached the victim in his vehicle before he drove away, collided with another vehicle and then ran from the car.

The group, armed with edged weapons, then chased the man to a nearby loading dock area in the carpark area where he was stabbed, Detective Inspector Tilly said.

The victim walked a short distance before collapsing and was assisted by a shop owner who provided him with first aid and contacted emergency services.

Detective Inspector Tilly said the victim was driving a silver Honda Civic and the group of men was in a Hyundai Kona sedan.

He said some of the men left the area in the Hyundai and drove away in a northerly direction along Society Avenue.

"We are seeking the public's assistance to please come forward with any information and to contact Crime Stoppers," he said

"We do believe at this stage … this was a targeted attack and that the parties were known to each other.

"This is extremely confronting for an incident to play out in the community, an incident that involved edged weapons and machetes is just horrifying."

Last week Victoria's premier announced the state would ban machetes alongside the introduction of tougher bail laws.

Detective Inspector Tilly indicated police were supportive of the government's crackdown on machetes.

"We are grateful that there is new legislation that's looking at being progressed in relation to machetes … potentially becoming prohibited weapons," he said.

"We welcome any new legislation that will make the community a safer place."
