Danube Carnival Celebrating International Folk Art Marks 30th Anniversary

The Danube Carnival, an international folk arts festival, will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a spectacular parade, an international folk dance competition, and a dance house, between June 6-14 in Budapest.

The jubilee event will feature performances by foreign and Hungarian folk dance ensembles, including István Pál’s Szalonna and Band, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and the Danube Art Ensemble, as well as the 7th FolKid Children and Youth Folk Festival.

Guest countries include North Macedonia, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Türkiye,

the organizers said.

Between June 6-9, Hungarian and foreign dance troupes, an international production of the European Dance Caravan, created to celebrate its 20th anniversary, and nationalities living in Hungary will perform on a large stage in the garden of the Hungarian National Museum. In the evenings, folk music concerts will be performed by the Duna Art Ensemble and the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble.

On June 7, the 7th FolKid Children’s and Youth Folk Arts Festival gala will be held at the same venue, with performances by outstanding Hungarian dance groups and children’s performances on the Story Stage.

The carnival parade will also take place on the same day, with the participation of foreign and Hungarian dance troupes, as well as children’s and youth dance groups.

The spectacular parade will be followed by performances by the participating bands on the main stage.

The Kós Károly Cultural Center in Budakalász will host the Kalászi Carnival on June 10, with a show by international Danube Carnival ensembles and a Hungarian dance performance, followed by a show entitled Csepel Carnival the next day at the Csepel Cultural Center. On June 11, an international dance house will be held in the Kobuci Garden.

On June 12, foreign dance troupes will perform at the 14th Chain Bridge International Folk Dance Competition in the Erzsébetliget Theater, which will be judged by an international jury and award the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Chain Bridge Prizes.

On June 14, the closing day of the festival, the audience will be able to watch the Danube Carnival’s Golden Times jubilee gala performance on the Margaret Island Open-Air Stage.

On the occasion of the jubilee, the most memorable stage moments of the past 30 years will be recalled, the most successful scenes of the grand gala performances will be selected and the outstanding groups of the FolKid children’s festival will be present.

The artistic collaboration will feature foreign dance and music ensembles invited to the carnival, as well as renowned guest performers joining the Danube Art Ensemble and the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble.
