— Dr. David Benton, New England Cancer Specialists.

SCARBOROUGH, MAINE, UNITED STATES, September 25, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- In conjunction with over 450 local Summits across the nation and the national Summit in Washington DC, New England Cancer Specialists hosted a Biden Cancer Community Summit focused on value-based cancer care. This Community Summit was part of the Biden Cancer Initiative’s nationwide effort to double the rate of progress against cancer.

The New England Cancer Specialists Biden Cancer Community Summit was designed to draw in and learn from the perspectives of patients and the cancer patient support network – family members, caregivers, patient navigators, and other care providers for insights on the realities of living with cancer and the ripple effects a diagnosis can have on families and communities. Dr. David Benton, a board-certified oncologist at New England Cancer Specialists, and Janice Martin RN, BSN, OCN, New England Community Oncology Alliance Patient Network (CPAN) Chapter Leader, presented at the Summit.

“Value-based cancer care is the next step in cancer care,” said Dr. David Benton, lead physician at the Topsham office of New England Cancer Specialists. “By controlling the rising costs of cancer care and continually improving quality, patients have a better experience and outcomes can be improved.”

“Cancer affects us all and has an impact on more than just the patient’s health,” noted Benton. “The impact that a diagnosis can have on an individual, the family, and friends can be devastating. Research, targeted treatment options, new drugs, and patient-centric care such as the Oncology Medical Home protocols used at New England Cancer Specialists are all focused on improving both patient care, the patient experience, and ultimately prognosis.”

The New England CPAN chapter and its advocacy leader, Janice Martin RN, BSN, OCN, host community outreach and educational events like the Summit, which are open to the community. CPAN is a noncancer type specific national network representing all members of the cancer community. The organization brings attention to the impact of Medicare legislative policies on cancer patients, specifically the issues affecting access to local and affordable care.
